Training Centre and Research Facilities for Mwanza
Mwanza, Tanzania
The centre enables HIV-related research to be conducted and collected within Tanzania, rather than being shipped overseas. It also offers training in research and administration. Its glazed entrance separates the two training rooms, which are high ceilinged for thermal comfort. Their curved, stone-clad facades echo local historical buildings. Most offices offer contemplative views towards a wooded slope, while storage rooms face the main training room. Courtyards introduce ventilation and light and allow the conference/training space to have minimal openings on the public facade, aiding privacy. Passive solutions for thermal comfort include east-west orientation to minimise solar gain, and a double roof enclosing an insulating layer of air.
