Bajaj Science Education Centre
Wardha, India

This one-storey educational facility accommodating 500 students is arranged in a strong geometry of orthogonal spaces, interspersed with open-air courtyards. Constructed of seven primary materials locally sourced and known to local craftsmen, it features unadorned brick and double-brick walls, and vaulted concrete ceilings. Structurally, the walls are tied together by concrete beams, and the ceiling with steel frame. In keeping with an aesthetic of simplicity, honesty and empiricism, no plaster or paint has been applied. Local Shahabad stone is used in the shaded, at times colonnaded, courtyards where indoors and outdoors mix, and learning spills over in spaces that flow from public to private.
