House at Bangsar
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Constrained by steep topography, this three-storey residence, with a modernist aesthetic, is placed on stilts and employs a transparent elevator at the ground level, emphasizing the sense of arrival. The elevator passes a jacuzzi to reach an entrance porch at the second level, into the living and dining spaces, where one is greeted by a courtyard pool, waterfall and views of the city. The architects cite vernacular solutions as sources of inspiration, and point to local precedents: Malay houses on stilts, and Old Straits Chinese courtyards, wind channel technology and traditional porches. The building is constructed of reinforced concrete, with glass curtain walls.
