MCC Gazebo Pavilion
Silver Spring, United States
Built to a tight budget, the Pavilion’s design draws upon the rudimentary temple form of the rural hut. A welcoming space for various community activities, it comprises a roofed open atrium, an outer storage area for gardening and other equipment such as prayer mats, and an inner storage area to support catering. The storage areas are faced in painted, grooved composite plywood, and the metal hipped roof is supported on a steel beam and steel columns. Screens of horizontal, widely spaced cedar wood planks around parts of the atrium’s three open sides give a sense of enclosure without obstructing the view. A slab extending around the structure provides bench seating.
