Punggol Promenade
Singapore, Singapore
Previously a fishing village of timber shacks, Punggol is currently the site of a development of 100,000 homes. Providing pedestrian connectivity along the waterfront, the Promenade bridges drainage canals and provides car-parking, washroom and rest-stop facilities. Its designers sought to retain a sense of place and of interaction with nature. The arrival deck’s sharp silhouette pays silent tribute to the Second World War Sook Ching massacre memorial site on the beach. A long stainless-steel railing mirrors the landscape’s horizontality, while the rest shelter’s swirling form emulates sea waves. Cantilevered look-out decks appear to hover over the water. The giant waterlily pond is intriguingly juxtaposed next to the lapping sea waves.
