Nanchabarwa Visitor Centre
Tibet, China
Situated on a slope leading to the last village of Zhibai deep in Yaluntzangpu Grand Canyon, the visitor centre is conceived as a series of massive stone walls set into the mountainside. With no windows visible from the road, its form is boldly contemporary, while the masonry reflects local construction. Besides its function as a welcome centre for visitors to the region, it serves also as a supply base for hikers and as a ‘town centre’ for villagers, with meeting rooms, medical centre and roof garden. Its main reception/information hall is lit by skylights and has a view window facing north towards Mount Namchabawa.
