Stairs Office Building
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
This five-storey office building takes a rectangular block, and carves out a staircase on the periphery, effectively inserting a jagged diagonal cut into the surface of each façade. In so doing, a simple device is employed to make a distinctive architectural statement which is further highlighted by painting the staircase red, and by a fenestration scheme that keeps windows to a minimum on three of the four facades. This design is made possible by reinforced concrete construction resting on four columns, with cantilevered stairs and slabs on the periphery of each floor that provide light, ventilation and shading, as well as access to each unit.
