The project involves the adaptive re-use of three existing and adjacent buildings to accommodate a programme that includes libraries, offices, residential units, and academic functions. The main structure is a 19th century building. The other two, both built in the1960s, connect to the rear of the main structure. The reconstruction preserves the main building’s street elevation, and its interior marble staircase. The structural consolidation of all three buildings uses steel to replace or reinforce concrete. The distinct footprints of the two rear buildings are preserved and bridged by an atrium. The extensive use of glass throughout provides for light, ventilation, and views of the Bosphorus.
