Armona Building
Istanbul, Türkiye

When the earthquake resistance of two stone-built storage buildings previously on this protected coastal site was called into question, plans to conserve and adapt them as offices were abandoned in favour of a steel-framed reconstruction. This structure interprets the concept of preservation through the reinvention of a traditional Bosphorus sea-front building type, the 'yali'. Balancing the client’s desire for open views with planning regulations’ minimum required percentage of solid surfaces, its double facade comprises an inner glass curtain wall and an outer system of fixed and movable screens reminiscent of the yali’s adjustable facades. High-performance thermal insulation and the extensive use of local, natural materials, including wood, reflect concerns for environmental sustainability.
