Stadium Mass Rapid Transit Station
Singapore, Singapore
The station hearkens back to its great European predecessors, offering a moment of spatial grandeur. Its roofed open-air concourse accommodates surge crowds from the stadiums and theatre nearby, avoiding panic and crushing. The above-ground structure, of prefabricated steel with ribbed aluminium cladding, varies from fabric-soft to stone-hard in appearance, according to the quality of light and time of day. The architecture is inspired by landscape forms and the art of Richard Serra, contrasting linear and curved elements. The interior abstracts geological forms, creating a shimmering, glassy grotto. A central skylight over the below-ground platforms casts dramatic shadows that track the path of the sun.
