Al Salaam Mosque and Education Centre
Burnaby, Canada
This mosque was built over six years on a very limited budget. As well as a place of prayer, it is an adult and youth education facility and a venue for community events. Located between a busy road and the greenbelt in Burnaby, it effectively expresses the civic participation of the local Muslim community. The design combines symbolic and contextual references. It is constructed from masonry and timber, commonly used materials in the region. Daylight is widely exploited because of the poor climate and the skylights and the glazed mihrab symbolise divine light.
