Ghalib House
Cairo, Egypt
This house on the outskirts of Cairo is a sanctuary for its owners, who wanted privacy but outstanding views and a ‘dream house’ but a low cost. The design evolved in response to these paradoxical constraints. It is orientated to take advantage of the views and prevailing wind, with large windows to the north divided by steel mullions providing unobtrusive security. Other walls are massive to protect from the street and the sun. The triple aspect living space to the west leads to a terrace benefitting from evening sunlight. The main bedroom is an equivalent but smaller volume to the east, enjoying the morning sun.
