Fakhry Agrilodge and Farm Administration
Tanta, Egypt
The client for this project runs an organic farm and wanted new administrative facilities and an eco-lodge for tourists. An existing abandoned structure was selected as the base because of it workable plan form and strong foundations. This was extended with a load-bearing dome and vault system. As well as being appropriate to the organic aesthetic, this building technique revived a vernacular craft and offered a low-energy solution, with high thermal mass, natural lighting controlled by shutters and ventilation encouraged by the dual orientation of rooms. Its labour-intensive construction ensured locals benefited and it stands as an economic model to encourage the preservation of farmland on the Nile delta.
