Seismic Resistant Housing
Various locations, Pakistan
This project comprises 82 houses for families lacking the financial, technical or physical capacity to rebuild their own homes following a devastating earthquake in 2005. The architect worked without fee in developing a sustainable design and construction programme that sets a precedent for further rebuilding. The design reworks vernacular techniques and local materials into a structure that will flex rather than collapse in an earthquake. The lightweight timber frame filled with earth and mud sits on strong plinth foundations and is topped with a corrugated hipped roof. The efficient design maximised the beneficiaries of the programme and the community was trained in construction techniques.
