Home for Street Children
Lahore, Pakistan
There are around 10,000 children living on the streets of Lahore and the Punjab government has set up this pilot project to enable 500 rescued children to be educated, counselled and rehabilitated into society. The project is simply laid out in three zones - academic, residential and recreational. The design is intended to be welcoming and comfortable with extensive use of gables to signify the idea of shelter, and buildings restricted to an unintimidating two storeys despite a restricted site. The home was built using local labour, materials and construction technologies, with low-maintenance red-brick facades animated by glazed ceramic tiles.
