Ambi House
Nilai, Malaysia
This project brings together eight adults and two teenagers from an extended family to live together communally, pooling together their resources. With a low budget, the house’s structure was necessarily simple, comprising two stacked linear boxes with open-plan living and dining areas below and sleeping areas above in the form of seven rooms of equal size, all leading off a long open corridor. The emphasis is on nature, and the house has a semi-open skin that brings in daylight and cross-ventilation and opens up views of the surrounding forest, with all spaces looking onto a garden that occupies half the site.
