Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum
Pathum Thani, Thailand
This museum is located in the centre of Bangkok University’s campus. It is set 2.8 metres below ground level to enhance the master plan and to express the essence of Sukhothai pottery, which is fired in a kiln half-buried in the ground. This pottery forms the core of an extensive collection of Southeast Asian ceramics in the permanent exhibition space, which is complemented by temporary and outdoor exhibition spaces and an amphitheatre. Varying roof levels bring natural light deep into the plan as part of an environmental strategy that includes green roofs for cooling and CO2 absorption and the cooling sink advantages of subterranean building.
