Municipal Theatre
Almada, Portugal
This project aims to bring character and a sense of identity to its undistinguished urban site. Fitting tightly into its plot, the theatre acknowledges the scale of the surrounding buildings, exploiting the natural slope of the site to reduce the impact of the large stage box. A similar square volume houses rehearsal and experimental theatres. The complex also includes a foyer space, library, dressing rooms, exhibition areas, storage, technical facilities, a café and offices, all wrapped around a triangular pocket of outside space. The whole is unified by a distinctive cladding of light blue glazed ceramic tiles.
