Jawaharlal Darda Memorial
Yavatmal, India
The memorial is dedicated to freedom fighter Jawaharlal Darda and is the only public space in the chaotic quasi-urban settlement of Yavatmal. An amphitheatre of local stone wraps the site of Darda’s cremation, which is marked by a polished marble platform denoting purity, surrounded by granite walkways denoting depth of thought and a pool representing spirituality. An eternal light serves as a constant, city-wide reminder of his vision. The wall behind the platform represents firmness of belief and shields off visual distractions. The manipulation of light on its surface further evokes spiritual peace. The intention is to create a unique experience for every visitor using a simple architectural vocabulary.
