CMR Institute
Bangalore, India
This speculative institute in northern Bangalore explores the idea of education as a social condenser. Accommodation is split into three blocks creating a shaded open space at the heart of the site. The ground floors contain public facilities to encourage the local community to use the institute; the upper storeys are reserved for student housing; and in between are the classrooms. These follow the modular construction that allows for change of use and enables cut outs and terraces to articulate the facades. Stepped external ramps foster informal encounters. Local materials, natural light and water harvesting all reduce energy costs.
