British High Commission
Colombo, Sri Lanka
The new High Commission aims to create an exceptional working environment using a passive environmental strategy, with a modest aesthetic appropriate for a formal colonial power. The single storey building is arranged as a spine with ‘legs’ holding each department, separated by courtyards, arranged on either side. This facilitates communication, accessibility and spatial clarity. Glazed thermal chimneys along all roofs admit light and induce breezes when external doors are opened. The water feature in each courtyard is inspired by local tradition and further cools the natural ventilation. Local materials include terracotta tiling, coconut timber wall panels and dry stone walling while concrete roof vaults minimise columns to facilitate future flexibility.
