Yarbasan House
Bodrum, Türkiye
Developed in response to the proliferation of rapid, industrialised development in Bodrum, this village of 27 houses embodies traditional design and construction techniques. The andesite stone and timber were both sourced locally and more than 200 local people were employed in on-site workshops to prepare materials. This reduced costs and has revived traditional building techniques and crafts in the area. The houses, cafés and workshops are massed to create a well-defined village and the buildings are works of art with brick vaults; domes and arches; ceramics and handmade furniture. Their popularity could be seen to demonstrate the economic viability of employing traditional construction in a modern Mediterranean town.
