Princess Salma Terraced Housing Estate
Al Zarqa, Jordan
This is the first of a three phase development of a new town adjacent to Zerqa, the second largest city in Jordan. Containing 170 dwellings arranged as double terraces around a communal space, the estate is highly ordered in contrast to the local chaotic urban fabric. Units have one to four bedrooms and each has outdoor space. The concrete structures are faced in local stone and the roofs are curved precast concrete. These echo the form of the military barracks formerly on this site, giving it a sense of place. The terracing and shared square are designed to foster community and the scale, proportion and fenestration all reflect local tradition.
