Maopingcun Village School
Leiyang, China
Taking the traditional residential buildings of Maoping village as its starting point, the two-storey school on terraced ground on a hill slope resembles a cluster of village houses with its red brick walls, gables and small skywells. Costs were kept low due to the participation of the local villagers in the construction process and due to the adoption of traditional ventilation insulation and shading methods in the building. The northern facade is perforated with lattice brickwork similar to traditional buildings, and the southern facade has a bamboo screen along the second floor. The monolithic and contemporary form of the school building is in keeping with the spirit of the age.
