Newton Suites Residential Tower
Singapore, Singapore
This 36-storey apartment block offers a new paradigm for high-rise development in South-East Asia. With cantilevered communal sky gardens, creepers climbing the full height of the stairwell, and planted common areas on the roof of the adjacent car park, there is now more planting than if the site had been left vacant. There are many simple, low-cost energy-saving solutions: projecting sun shades animate the facades, generous balconies provide outdoor rooms, and, with openings on three of their four sides, the apartments are naturally ventilated. The result counters the smooth-skinned Western high-rise with a permeable three-dimensional interface between interior and exterior.
