Reconstruction of the Uzinovici Mosque Complex
Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The restoration of the Uzinovici Mosque Complex was motivated by the idea that the rehabilitation of a community - more specifically, the return of an expelled Muslim population - is aided by the rehabilitation of visible features of their homeland, such as mosques. The project has enabled the recovery of lost building skills and folk traditions associated with the construction process (such as the sacrifice of an animal at the beginning of the work). By using exclusively local resources (craftsmen, labourers, suppliers, materials), it has also given a boost to the local economy.
