Reconstruction of Neziraga Mosque
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The UNESCO rehabilitation plan for Mostar proposed that the remains of the 16th-century Neziraga mosque be conserved as an archaeological site. The local Islamic community went further, and reconstructed the mosque in its entirety, as a symbol of their city and of the perserverance of Islamic civilisation. Very little of the physical fabric remained (the structure was destroyed by the local authorities in 1950), so much of the evidence about architectural details came from old photographs. The configuration of the mosque was based on the oral account of an old resident of the neighbourhood and a comparison with similar structures.
