Student Dormitories, University of Haifa
Haifa, Israel
The dormitory complex is built as a sequence of terraces that follow the steep northern slope of Mount Carmel, overlooking Haifa Bay. It houses 650 students, 30 per cent of whom are Arab. Besides the dormitories, the complex includes a community centre for student activities, conferences and ceremonies, and an apartment building containing five modular flats. The buildings are of in-situ reinforced concrete, covered with local stone chiselled in a variety of ways. An additional important material is stucco dyed in three earth hues. Construction was undertaken in phases and continued for nine years.
