Abdulla Al Zayed House
Muharraq, Bahrain
Abdulla Al Zayed was a poet, writer and founder of the first newspaper in Bahrain. His former home has now been restored and adapted for use as a press heritage centre, containing a library and offices among other facilities. The two-storey courtyard house is located in Muharraq, a town with a rich historic urban fabric. Great care was taken during its renovation to preserve original features and to use traditional materials (such as coral stone) wherever possible. Concrete blocks and reinforced concrete slabs were used in only a few places where the original structure was beyond repair.
