SOS Children's Villages in Sri Lanka
Various locations, Sri Lanka
A project designed for orphans and destitute children, consisting of ten to twenty single-storey housing blocks characterized by overhanging roofs, covered verandas, and courtyards all arranged around a central green space. The village includes a community hall, offices, and residences for outside volunteers, and is run daily by a nurse, handyman, and village director. Educational and social centers are provided to help ease the village's integration into the surrounding neighborhoods. Primary building materials were granite, sakka (soft yellow stone), laterite, and sun-dried earth.
