SOS Children's Village Zanzibar
Zanzibar, Tanzania
The complex consists of a kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, a multi-purpose hall, a group of family houses, a workshop and administration building, teacher's flats, and a shopping arcade. The various buildings all adopt a courtyard plan and simple methods of construction in local coral stone bound by lime with concrete used sparingly in lintels, columns and paving. The roof was covered in cement tile which uses coconut palm fibre as a main component.
