Kanuni Caravanserai Restoration
Çesme, Türkiye
The 16th century caranvanserai follows the traditional khan layout of a square ground plan, open courtyard, surrounded by a central arcade and lined by barrel vaulted cells. The arrangement is followed on both ground and first floor levels. The entrance porch is the only element which projects out of the regular square plan to emphasize the monumentality of the main western elevation. It is surmounted by a saucer dome. In the conversion process, no structural alterations have been made. The introduction of bathrooms required the erection of thin partition walls. Spaces are naturally ventilated through the existing chimneys and no central heating system has been installed, given that the hotel is primarily used in the summer season. The structure now serves as a cafe and restaurant.
