Fada Prototype Housing
Fada-N'Gourma, Burkina Faso
The initial phase consisted of a thorough study of the local architecture and building materials, and the mason Oudrago trained a small team of workers. The rooms arranged around the central patio are either square or round in plan, following the regional tradition, and open onto the courtyard. No windows are pierced on the facades most exposed to the sun. All rooms are covered by vaulted or domed roofs, built of clay bricks produced in-situ. The thick walls and white-washed domes further contribute to reduce heat gain.
