Mental Health Care Units
Bamako, Mali
The architectural solution adopted for this pilot project was based on three main objectives:
- for therapeutic reasons, the patients participate in the building process and are paid for any work done;
- structures built from durable materials; and
- the underlying source of inspiration for the aesthetic aspect and harmony with existing structures be drawn from local architecture.

The units are grouped in clusters, in the manner of traditional villages, and linked by an enclosing wall, thereby creating a centralized area that may be used for various outdoor activities. The domed, canopy-like meeting room is surrounded by the cluster units. Each unit is a simple 3.5x4.0m room with a flat roof and a built-in bench to sleep on.
