Al-Bayda, located within the high plateau of the south-central region of Yemen, is a historic town, previously governed under the sultanate of Bayhan. It was previously joined with Sana'a (1934), prior to the unification of the two Yemen states in 1990, and is also located near the previously disputed territory of Aden, to which it was formerly joined under the British-controlled Aden Protectorate.
Though not administrated as a formal province, it was developed, primarily for political reasons in 1949. Al-Bayda has served as a traditional commercial center, valued for its production of Teff, as well as its breeding of horses.
