Pune city today is several things rolled into one. There is a high-technology industrial milieu and there are vestiges of a European colonial city, a land-based feudal empire and a provincial rural market town. Throughout its history, aside from being an administrative and market centre, minor lords established their presence in the city in the form of mansions or wadas. Numerous wadas were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
