Founded in 2001 by Simona Malvezzi, and brothers Wilfried Kuehn and Johannes Kuehn, the firm quickly rose to prominence in the field of museum and exhibition architecture with the conversion of a former brewery in Kassel into exhibition space for Documenta 11 in 2002. In 2004 they designed an extension of the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin that converted warehouses behind the museum into galleries, and connecting them to the museum via a passageway. It is a remarkable example of adaptive reuse. In 2007 Keuhn Malvezzi redesigned the Julia Stoschek Collection in Dusseldorf, a project that garnered them their first nomination for the Mies van der Rohe award. The Joseph Pschorr House in Munich garnered them another nomination in 2015. In addition, the firm has dealt with sensitive preservation issues for historic structures such as the Berggruen Collection and the Kunstgewerbemuseum Museum in Berlin, the Belvedere in Vienna, and the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt.
When it won the special prize, Kuehn Malvezzi's entry for the Humboldt-Forum competition in Berlin attracted a great deal of attention. Their critical approach to reconstruction shown in this design was also awarded with the 2009 German Critics' Prize in the architecture category. In 2010 they won the competition to design the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt.
Kuehn Malvezzi won the international competition for the Insectarium adjacent to the Biodome in Montreal in 2014. The architects are currently working on the new presentation of the collections of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick and a new venue for the Moderne Galerie at the Saarlandmuseum.
Their projects have been shown in international solo and group exhibitions, including the 10th, 13th and 14th Architecture Biennial in Venice and Manifesta 7 in Trento. Kuehn Malvezzi will participate in the 1st Chicago Architecture Biennial in 2015.
