David Chipperfield Architects

Germany

With David Chipperfield Architects, founded in 1985, David Chipperfield has developed a design methodology that is now applied across five international offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai, and Santiago de Compostela. The practice is renowned for its refined, context-sensitive architecture that emphasises clarity, permanence, and civic value. The firm’s portfolio spans a wide range of typologies and scales – from cultural and public buildings to commercial spaces and master plans – and is always guided by a strong sense of social responsibility and place.

In addition to his design work, David Chipperfield has taught and lectured at universities around the world. In 2012, he curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the title Common Ground, promoting collaboration and shared values in architecture. He was the 2020 guest editor of the Italian design magazine Domus and, in 2017, founded Fundación RIA, a non-profit entity supporting sustainable development in Galicia, Spain.

His many accolades include the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, the Praemium Imperiale, a knighthood, and the 2023 Pritzker Architecture Prize – awarded in recognition of his enduring contribution to architecture as a public and cultural endeavour.
