Nubian arch, mud brick construction
I'm writing a dissertation on the sustainability of mud brick construction and the Nubian arch in particular.

I'm looking to find out further information on large span earth vaults such as Ctesiphon in Iraq. Grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Architect Hassan Fathy of Egypt did a lot of work on mud-brick barrel vaults, which sound like your "Nubian arch"...

As I see it the key to construction is using brick to build diagonally across the vault. And I have seen and photographed a short tunnel with diagonal brickwork made by railway engineers in Victorian Britain. :)))

Robert,

Please check out http://www.auroville.org/.

It is a building centre which dcoes a lot of work on traditional and environment friendly building technology. Mud blocks are just one of these technologies (apart from ferrocement roofing channels, etc.).

Nubian vaults actually originated in Africa (in Nubea as they say). This website also has information on Nubian vaults. You can also write to them.

I have worked with Satprem at Earth Institute, Auroville. The work they have done there in earth vaults, arches and dome is just extraordinary. You can visit Auorville and get as much information and more than require from their website. Let me know about your experience and feel free to discuss with me.

Hi Tushar,

Just for my knowledge, when were you at Auroville? Which year(s)?

A visit to Auroville will really help you a lot, as my one month at the AVBC has really helped me to understand construction techniques. Moreover, they stock a large amount of literature, which will help.

Hi, I am working with Satprem in Auroville right now. Thus, I highly recommend you to have a look at www.earth-auroville.org. It has a lot of information, and like others I would also suggest you to visit Auroville. Satprem also holds lot of training programmes where he teaches in detail about construction of arches, vaults and domes with mud bricks. Tushar, I am sure you know what I am talking about.

Probably the most active Nubian vault construction program is 'Earth roofs in the Sahel', run by the French / Burkinab NGO 'Association la Voute Nubienne' (AVN). Started ten years ago, this program has trained over 115 Burkinab and Malian masons / entrepreneurs in Nubian vault construction, and has built over 500 vaults - mainly homes for rural people, but also community buildings such as schools, dispensaries, a church, and a mosque.
Full details, with many photos and plans, can be found on the AVN website:

I forgot to mention in my previous post that the ArchNet digital library holds 39 images from AVN's 'Earth roofs in the Sahel' program, which were submitted when the Program was nominated for the last cycle of the Aga Khan Architectural Award.
