The relevance of mud as a building material
I am researching mud in the light of appropriate building material for sustainable habitat in developing countries and the restrictions imposed on mud architecture due to constraints. I would like to know of interesting case studies, e.g., Hassan Gathy's work in Egypt.

The ArchNet Digital Library contains the Hassan Fathy Archives. More information regarding Fathys work and mud brick architecture will be available soon. I also recommend looking at the following sources:

The Art of Building in Yemen, by Fernando Verandah; and

The Valley of Mud Brick Architecture, by Selma Samar Damluji

Another relevant book alongwith Shiraz Allibhai's recommended ones is "Architecture for the Poor" by Hasan Fathy.

Within the Indian context, I know that the villages in Kutch and some in Rajastan use mud as a building material.

Here in Mozambique, mud is used to cover a structure of wood, and that way the builder gets a very nice, flat wall - The kind of soil used gives the wall the desired color -usualy red or black!

Here in Brazil mud is used in a similar way as in Mozambique. Such technique is called "pau-a-pique". The big problem is that when the mud dries it cracks, allowing a certain insect, the transmissor of the Chagas disease, to hide.

While the United States is not quite a developing poverty (although its GINI inequality index would place it among them), there's a large amount of work being done on Adobe construction that you might be interested in. Beginning at first as an experiment in sustainability mimicking the vernacular architecture of the southwest. (A good alternative to having wood or concrete buildings that are air conditioned all the time). It has now become successfully commercialized. Since the US is one of the countries with the strictest building codes, maybe there's a lesson to be learned here in the success of such an unconventional material. Check out Adobe Builder, Adobe Newsgroup and the Earth Sheltered Construction Guide.
