i am in 4th yr B.arch 2nd sem...i am thinking about my 5th yr thesis topic...i am very much interested in doing something related to islamic architecture...last semester i had done a research paper of "calligraphy-beyond pen and paper", which focused on arabic calligraphy of islamic buildings...

Mishgan, maybe you could try comparing the similarities and differences between abstract imagery and calligraphy.

Mishgan, what about a hospital surrounded by shops? The rent from the shops goes to support the hospital.

Mishgan first of all you have to search out for this that does islamic Architecture exist?
According to my view point there is no pure and original islamic Architecture. So you are thinking about thesis topic then you can work on islamic museum or a museum having Islamic archives and books etc.

hey frank...a hospital with shops surrounding it is a good idea...but how will i rationale using Islamic architecture for a hospital...???
Do u think i am being very rigid in my thought process by keeping "Islamic architecture" as a base of selecting a good thesis topic? other students might select their topic first and then decide what style of architecture would they plan in...

zeeshan thanks a lot for your response...i agree that Islam did not mention any specific form which denotes as the true symbol for Islamic architecture...But i think the architecture styles like fatimid, ottoman, bazyntine can be regarded as Islamic architecture...

Hi Mishgan,
How about BIM as a topic? I am about to complete my doctoral degree and BIM allows me a very good perspective on the future of our profession.

Mishgan, I was thinking in terms of a traditional free hospital for the poor and for travellers with associated mosque within an urban block and the shops would surround and line the streets outside. Islamic architecture should come naturally to such a design.

frank, i like the idea of a "traditional free hospital"...i came up with one more topic which is "calligraphy art center", with workshops for calligraphy and display area etc...what do u think about this topic...do tell me please...

Mishgan, Calligraphy workshops and display spaces sounds very aesthetic.

Personally, I like abstract art such as Ebru ("ebru" is a Turkish word for painting abstract but fluid patterns using oil and water). Here in England it was once normal for most books to have "marbled" covers, either on the outside or on the inside covers. I assume that the word "marbled" was used because these designs looked like patterns in multicoloured marbles.

When I was at school I painted some abstract designs which are not fluid and look more like carpet or tile designs, so I will try to attach an image for you and an ebru image. :)

Okay, I see my attempt to attach images did not work.

RAAJ: I suggest you put your post here back in as a separate topic, otherwise you will confuse people (including myself).

Dear Mishgan - your line of thought is very interesting ... One of the suggestions in the forum is very interesting - you could create a platform to 'disseminate' development and attributes of calligraphy over time and concentrate on an apt built environment for the same ... I would also suggest that you look at what is the focus of your institute - i.e. whether research related topic is encouraged or is it more of a design oriented out-put. .. It does shape your topic in many ways ... Also- an art centre may not be as cliche as you think ... it is your design and you can make it as interesting as possible - isnt it ??

hi somi,
thanks for your response...
i have decided to do a "calligraphy center" for my thesis...to promote and learn the dying art of calligraphy,
i want the building to have more of design-oriented out-put, yet there will be a research oriented part too...
basically i am thinking of place which would have studios, workshops, exhibition space, library, accommodation facility, a research cell etc...
what u said is true that how i design is what really matters...
if u have any case-study in mind please do tell me...
