Dissertation : Architecture as a means to instigate positive change in people's attitude towards neglected spaces and entities in public places
Hi, I wish to do my architectural dissertation on 'How can Architecture be used as a means to instigate positive change in people's attitude towards neglected spaces and entities in public places'

Aim

To identify spaces in public places that are being neglected by people and to suggest how simple changes in the architectural setting of these spaces can help eliminate such ignorance.

Objectives

1. To explore how public spaces influence human behavior in order to gain an appreciation of the significant role that public spaces play in the daily lives of people.

2. To study how different techniques adopted in various urban settings have contributed to the positive change in attitude of people towards such spaces.

3. To identify public places where simple techniques can be adopted inorder to eliminate ignorance of the public to such spaces.

In short, I want to explore various methods that have been adopted in various places with the primary idea of reclaiming the quality of the space and to change the outlook of the people towards such spaces..one of the examples would be the piano stairs. The Piano Stairs were executed by Volkswagen in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2009 as a fun, interactive sound/music experience that encouraged members of the public to use the stairs in preference to an escalator. Installed at a subway stairwell, the Piano Stairs succeeded in attracting 66 per cent of pedestrians to use the stairs rather than the escalator.

I don't plan to take this dissertation towards 'tactical urbanism', rather I want to focus on architectural modifications that have made people take a different outlook towards the things that had been neglected earlier.
Towards the end, I intend to identify places where adopting such methods could help reclaim it.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks :)

Nav, an interesting idea. Public spaces and in particular those spaces used to allow people to move from one place to another tend to be neglected because most urban-dwellers are in a hurry to get from one place to another.

Therefore, what you want to investigate is how to change the behaviour of urban people from (a) merely going from Point A to Point B in the shortest time, to (b) moving more slowly and taking the scenic route and taking the time to pause and "smell the flowers" along the way. :)))

Hi Frank, I totally agree with your point. Can you also suggest some literature/article or anything that you think could help me with my dissertation ?

Nav, I am sure there is a lot of information on this subject, but on parallel paths to your own. So it is up to you to collect and collate. :)

For example, (a) "Greening the city" or introducing islands and strips of greenery into the urban environment. and (b) pedestrian passageways under roads and railways have been decorated with tiles, painted scenes, etc.
