Hillary, the primary principles for sustainable design should be (a) utility, (b) longevity, and (c)renewability, or recyclability, or both.

Utility: the aesthetic of plain and simple function in accord with the culture within which it is made.

Longevity: quality products with both robustness and reliability, as opposed to today`s principle of "Built-In Obsolescence" and the mass-media led fashions used by global manufacturers to keep `the masses` repeatedly buying unnecessary products.

Renewability: the systematic manufacture of products from either sustainable and / or local resources.

Recyclability: the systematic ability to recycle products into other products to extract maximum use value.
