Thesis: Space for the visually handicapped
Hi I m Mehul from the architectural college in Mumbai, India. I jst completed my 4th year n gonna start with thesis..n m a bit confused how to go about selecting a topic for thesis..if I hve to tke up any social issue then m intrested in getting advanced ways to encourage blind people. according to me whn a normal human being is compared with a blind human being..the later will have stronger imagination power than the normal human being who can see things.for example if I say curtains first thing what comes to your mind is wht u have in ur bedrooms typical curtains but a blind who has nvr seen those curtains may have 10 different ideas running in their brains about curtains. This imagination power can be utilized in a much better way n I would like to design a space which can make them imagine different things by feeling the space is it good enough for the thesis n if yes please comment and help me out.

Dear Mehul,

Could you please let us know which kind of space you plan to design? Collective (school, institution) or private?

Plannig to design an institutional + private space...a place where they can experience things n not just learn things...a space where they can explore their imagination in forms of art..my idea is of giving them an impression of a space more than just giving them a space...impression as in the visually challengd person has to feel the space where he is n nt jst knowin the space he is in...I hope u getting my point...

Thanks a lot mohit fr your help...m really greatful to you..cinema fr blind will definately help me a lot...and see if u can give me a feedback on a quality of space which can inspire you to think or imagine using feel...even if i get an idea of such a space for a visual person i can get an idea what kind of space should I acieve for a blind...besides that the structure will definately be only on feel smell and sound but this space is the spice of my structure which I hve to try and achieve..

Mehul, you should be careful when using fabrics such as curtains because large areas of fabric tend to absorb sounds and this interfers with the ability of an unsighted person to understand a space from the echoes, because the hearing of an unsighted person is more acute (like a bat).
