I am doing my thesis on retirement village, as an optional housing community for the aged with community, medical facilities.I would also look at hte following aspects-
-Relevance of these communities in the Indian context
-these communities as a stimulus for the neighbouring villages for employment and other social activities.
-improving the mobility and self dependency of old people .
-enhancing the social and community life of the old people.
-making the village self sufficient in terms of energy ,waste, food.
Rajat Malik
Rajat I think dependency of an old aged person exits in cities more than in a village. In the villages, they still are surviving well with the concept of joint family. Young villagers fully realize their social responsibility and unlike cities, their neighborhood is really strong.
If you have decided onto this topic...Im sure you must have done enough research towards this. Would you like to share it here?
Neha Rastogi
I think you got me wrong,This village is looking at the following target populations-
-old parents who have children working abroad with on one to look after them, but have financial assistance from their children and who visit them only a few times a year.
- NRI population who have saved enough to come back to their homeland to retire in peace.
-City senior citizens looking for a clean-green environment to retire a little away from the chaos of the city..

The villages nearby will have a symbiotic relation with these communities while they will provide the manpower required to serve here, they would get employment and other social benefits from the senior citizens like education..

Apart from this I was thinking of putting an orphanage in the complex....again for mutual benefits.

I share some sentiments with Rajat Malik.
It is good to think in such terms about the elderly people, but as Architects we have a role to rebuild and strengthen societal fabric. I wrote a similar thesis and did a project on the same for my sixth and final year thesis at the University, but my context was urban.
You proposal to provide such a facility in a rural setting only serves to fragment society along age-group lines hence more institutionalization in the society.
Why dont we encourage capable people within the society to empathize with our old and take care of them? I am sure this will encourage a more natural symbiotic relationship between the various age groups without institutionalization, and prevent segregation and isolation that civilization is forcing humans to do.
We already have sufficient stratification, segregation, and institutionalization in the society that we do not need to make more of the same.
When you came of age you were taken to school which defined and shaped who you are. The other institutions that contributed to your being, perception and interpretation of the world are mosques/churches/shrines/temples, hospitals, prisons, orphanages you name them. You looked at and defined people as belonging to this or that institution. The office also came up as a type to take people away from nature and the family set up.
Where are we taking our innate sense of community and communal living?
Nyongesa Lemmy
Nyongesa, Hello, can you give me some information on the both location and architecture of the Starehe School in Kenya? I ask because recently There have been some articles in British newspapers and the school itself is being used as a model for better education in Britain. :)))
Frank John Snelling
Nyongesa Lemmy,First of all I would like to thank you for the thoughtful analysis of the problem.
The major reason of moving out to a campus is making the old age people independent and safe our cities and even houses become unfit fr the old people which restricts their lifestyle and social isolation and depression creep in .
The air quality ,and health issues are another reasons which makes rural settings preferable.....
The site i am proposing will be on the outskirts of the city ,so they would not really miss the city life..........

Please if u could send me ur thesis material fr reference would be really helpful...nd your contact..urgently as I submissions next week.
Rajat Malik
