Searching for a photograph of "Baqqara" village
Hello, my name is Atef Azaiza.

I'm writing a book on the demilitarized zone between Israel to Syria from 1949-1966.

The zone was made up of three sectors, with a total area of 66.5 square kilometres. In the central sector, there were a number of Arab villages, including Baggara (Baqqara ), Ghanname, and Khouri farm.

In 1956 the inhabitants of these villages were compelled by the Israelis to go to Syria. If someone wants to help, I am looking for a photograph of the "Baqqara" village, which bordered Syria until 1956.

I am sure that one of the members can help- I am sure because I think there are many photographs on the village in a Syrian archive, also in a British archive pre-1948.

Thank you.

Hi Atef, has an entry for Kirad-al-Baqqara, which is kind of in the same area as your Baqqara but I'm not sure if it's the same village. If it is, you'll find a contemporary image there.

oops.. I just saw that you're the one who posted the image on, so I guess that's no use to you is it?

I've searched in the Gerthrude Bell Archive but the only mention of "Baqqara" is the Baqqara people although perhaps knowing the area you may find something in her photo album. There are also some images of the Safad area in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Catalog but again, I'm not sure if any of them will be of the villages you're researching. The keyword search for Palestine brings up a larger selection. You may also want to contact the Aga Khan Documentation Center at the Harvard Fine Arts Library for historic images.
