Bibliotheca Alexandrina
On the occasion of World Book Day I would like to start a thread dedicated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It was my great pleasure to visit it a couple of weeks ago and I look forward to share my impressions with other ArchNet members.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina
From my location on the city of alexandria where the libary i want to explain the design of the new building. The design concept is a simple circle inclined towards the sea, partly submerged in a pool of water, the image of the Egyptian sun, that in contemporary terms will illuminate the world and human civilization.

Moreover, an inclined roof allows indirect daylight and a clear view of the sea. Designed as an arrow, an elevated passageway links the University of Alexandria to the Corniche. The building is surrounded by a wall clad with Aswan granite engraved with calligraphic letters and representative inscriptions from the world civilizations.

This timely conceptualization symbolizes a unique form cum fiction which combines the heritage of the region with the intended revival of cultural radiance to reach the corners of the universe.

Location
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina lies alongside the University of Alexandria Faculty of Arts campus, in Shatby, and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea along a substantial portion of its northern frontage.

At Selsela, it is almost the same site of the ancient library-museum complex within the Royal Quarter, in the district then known as the Brocheum, where a few remains of the Graceo-Roman civilization were recently uncovered and later will be displayed in the Library museum.

At the panoramic vista across the circular Eastern Port stands diametrically and serenely the old Mameluke Citadel of Qait Bey, built in 1480 on the site of the famous Pharos Lighthouse.

I was trying to upload some pictures for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in my collection, I think I failed for the bad connection. Anyway I want to share with you my opinion about the influence of the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina on the culture on the local and the international level, I am asking now about the appropriate method to make our Bibliotheca takeover this responsibility

As a traditional library, this project will fail. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has to position itself as a center for seminars, conferences, lectures by visiting academics, and exhibitions tied to teaching symposiums. The days of the old libraries are numbered.

On the local level, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has already become a center for seminars, conferences, and other cultural activities. I think many Egyptian people visit this institution much more often for cultural events than for reading. If the Bibliotheca could also be a cultural center on the international level remains to be seen.

Let me add my own view of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - as I experienced it from the opposite side of the circular Eastern Harbour:
In the distance, between the fishing boats, rises the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as an extension of the sea, taking the same colour, hollowing out a space amongst the dense mass of houses - interrupting the long uniform row. Both form and colour make a good contrast to the surrounding buildings, thereby emphasizing the part and at the same time adding to the whole.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina is not only a Library. It is also an integrated cultural complex, with libraries, museums, exhibition areas, educational centers and an international conference center,

Being half Egyptian i have been able to visit this site many times when visiting relatives etc...The building is a great asset to alex, helping to add to the growth of alex, which has been induced by the new mayor. Yet again this type of architecture is seen more as a focal for tourist attraction rather than its functional design use. But that is not to say that it does not meet its function well, by any means. Sadly on entering the building, due to its huge scale in relative ergonomic terms, the shelves still seem pretty empty. One hopes that more inward investment from other countries/companies and benefactors might help this library to grow into the splendour it once stood many centuries ago.
