Sustainable Design

Can environmental friendly systems and commercial architecture ever become a single entity?
I believe that architecture in the future will become environmental friendly, since we soon will have no other option. This would result in design prototypes created for each climate. Or so I think.

In which case, what is the scope of sustainable, climatological and energy efficient architecture in commercial architecture? Is it possible to create an environmental prototype for a building typology (an office building or a typical residential building unit) for a particular climate? Can it be made cost effective so as make it commercially popular? Are there any particular examples?
