Aga Khan Award for Architecture Shortlist Announced
16th Cycle, 2023-2025

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture has announced the shortlist for the 16th cycle of the triennial award. The shortlist is comprised of 19 projects in 15 countries, from Senegal to China, that were selected by an independent Master Jury from a pool of 369 nominated projects. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established by His Late Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in 1977 to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of communities in which Muslims have a significant presence.


The Shortlisted Projects Are
  • Campus Startup Lions by Kéré Architecture
    An educational and entrepreneurial hub in Turkana, Kenya
  • Denso Hall Rahguzar Project by Heritage Foundation Pakistan / Yasmeen Lari
    A heritage-led, eco-urban enclave in Karachi, Pakistan
  • Islamic Centre Nurul Yaqin Mosque by Dave Orlando and Fandy Gunawan
    Replacing a mosque destroyed by a tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, the structure is surrounded by a shallow pool that can be drained to accommodate more worshipers.
  • Jahad Metro Plaza by KA Architecture Studio
    Designed for pedestrians and built using locally-made brick, the project replaced a less suitable structure in Tehran, Iran
  • Khan Jaljulia Restoration by Elias Khuri
    Situated among the remains of a fourteenth century Khan in Jaljulia, Israel, the project reconnects the people to their cultural heritage by transforming the deserted historical site into a vibrant public space
  • Khudi Bari by Marina Tabassum Architects
    Deployed a locations around Bangladesh, these replicable structures can be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled in response to the needs of communities affected by climatic and geographic changes
  • Majara Complex and Community Redevelopment by ZAV Architects / Mohamadreza Ghodousi
    Known for its colorful domes dotting the unique landscape of Hormuz, Iran, the project provides sustainable accommodations for tourists
  • Microlibraries by SHAU / Daliana Suryawinata, Florian Heinzelmann
    Six of the 100 envision instances of these environmentally friendly project have been built in various communities throughout Indonesia
  • Morocco Pavilion Expo Dubai 2020 by Oualalou + Choi
    Built for Expo Dubai 2020 in the UAE, but meant to be used as a cultural facility, thereafter, the pavilion pioneered large-scale rammed earth construction methods
  • Rami Library by Han Tümertekin Design & Consultancy
    The largest library in Istanbul is housed in the 18th-century Rami Barracks, adapted to preserve the original spatial qualities of the structure while accommodating the new library functions
  • Rehabilitation and Extension of Dakar Railway Station by Ga2D
    Built for passengers of a new express railway line in Dakar, Senegal, the station creates a deliberate contrast between the old and new structures, and give the forecourt back to pedestrians
  • Revitalisation of Historic Esna, by Takween Integrated Community Development
    The project transformed the city of Esna, Egypt from a neglected historical site centered on the Ptolemaic Temple of Khnum into a prospering historic city.
  • Revitalisation of Lalla Yeddouna Square by Mossessian Architecture and Yassir Khalil Studio
    This project reconnects the square to the river running through the center of the city and enhances pedestrian circulation by both preserving existing structures and creating new ones
  • Shamalat Cultural Centre by Syn Architects / Sara Alissa, Nojoud Alsudairi
    Developed from an old mud house on the periphery of Diriyah in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the project integrated historic spaces into everyday life
  • The Arc at Green School by IBUKU / Elora Hardy
    A new community wellness centre that is the product of 15 years of bamboo experimentation at the Green School in Bali, Indonesia
  • The Ned Hotel by David Chipperfield Architects
    A Brutalist structure in Doha, Qatar that was once the HQ of the Ministry of the Interior has been transformed into a boutique hotel
  • Vision Pakistan by DB Studios / Mohammad Saifullah Siddiqui
    Located in a densely populated area in Islamabad, Pakistan and housing a charity for disadvantaged youth, the project is a multistorey facility that echoes the architecture of the 1960s
  • West Wusutu Village Community Centre by Zhang Pengju
    Built from reclaimed bricks in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China, this project provides social and cultural spaces for residents and artists while addressing the religious needs of the local Hui Muslims
  • Wonder Cabinet by AAU Anastas
    The project established a multi-purpose, non-profit exhibition and production space overlooking the Al-Karkafeh Valley in Bethlehem, bringing together artists, engineers, designers and producers
  • The Master Jury for the 16th Cycle
    Meet the internationally renowned experts who combed through over 360 projects the select the shortlist, and who will ultimately determine which projects will receive the award later this year
  • Archives of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture
    One of the most coveted awards in the field, the AKAA prize is also the cornerstone of a broader set of initiatives that raise awareness and promote the adoption of the standards of excellence in architecture, planning practices, historic preservation and landscape architecture exemplified by recipient and shortlisted projects since the completion of the first cycle in 1980
