M'Salah Housing
Medea, Algeria
The principal architectural issue was the resolution of public and private spaces. The traditional, residential community is a dense group of collective, low rise housing penetrated by pedestrian streets that accommodate village life, and provide access and continuity to the site. These aspects of the traditional Algerian house are characterised by an inward orientation that ensures privacy for each family. The internal organization respects the cultural requirements of privacy for women, as well as the social and climatic function of an outdoor living area. The programme was refined by a sociological study of prospective clients undertaken by the architect to determine the types, sizes and number of required units.
